Practice to Scan and Relax the Body with Somatic Experiencing

Do you often find yourself feeling tense or stressed? Learning to scan and relax your body through Somatic Experiencing techniques can help you release pent-up tension and promote a sense of calm and well-being. Somatic Experiencing is a body-centered approach to healing trauma and stress developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, which focuses on tuning into bodily sensations to release stored energy and promote relaxation.

How to Practice Scanning and Relaxing the Body

Here is a simple exercise you can try to scan and relax your body using Somatic Experiencing:

  1. Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit or lie down.
  2. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to center yourself.
  3. Start by bringing your awareness to your feet. Notice any sensations, tension, or warmth in your feet.
  4. Slowly move your awareness up through your body, scanning each part for any tension or discomfort.
  5. As you scan each body part, take a moment to breathe into that area and consciously release any tension you may be holding.
  6. Continue scanning and relaxing each part of your body, moving up through your legs, torso, arms, and finally to your head.
  7. Once you have scanned and relaxed your entire body, take a few more deep breaths and notice how you feel.
